Remains of the past

Many conflicts have ravaged the bailiwick of Gex in the course of history. This region finally fell to France under the treaty of Lyon in 1601 following agreement with the Duke of Savoy. Just one condition laid down by Savoy: a corridor was to be made in the territory of Gex and the valley de la Valserine to allow Spanish troops to pass from Italy to Franche-Comté. The corridor, belonging to the Duke of Savoy, was to be called Spaniards' Path.

As the town of Chézery lay on the corridor's path, it remained Savoyard until the treaty of Turin in 1760, even though Lélex and Forens were French.

At that time the Valley de la Valserine bordered Franche-Comté, a possession of the Spanish crown. Boundary stones were put up all along the border in 1612 - 1613. Today some of these stones can still be seen, particularly those located near the source of the Valserine, close to the hamlet called "Le Tabagnoz".

In the district of Chézery, nowadays we can mark the spot where Spaniards' Way passed through. It led from Noirecombe, then past the Mill of Magras and joined up with the Borne au Lion.

Chézery Abbey, built in 1140, was in this district. The monks from this abbey were behind the clearing of the valley and establishing a permanent population in this reputedly hostile environment. They were also responsible for creating certain high mountain pastures in the Haut Jura range.

This abbey, which had considerable influence in the region, finally disappeared, destroyed by the angry local population. Whilst the revolution was raging, the people of Chézery were still "Serfs and subject to inheritance taxes" of the royal Abbey of Chézery. After so much suffering born through the presence of the monks, they invaded and pillaged the monastery in 1793.

There are still some buildings and outbuildings of this abbey that remain and especially the distinctive lay out of the village.
